Between the shadows of ancient Rome there are still some maniacs truly involved to spread the plague in its best form. After their first mcd, "Fucking' god Cult" is debut full length of LAPIS NIGER: this album will lead you into a trip through the utter darkness, where black metal is so cruel that will open wounds on your soul. Number two here in Italian Lapis Niger discography, straight up black metal band formed in 2003 with the aim to deliver cold and cruel black metal played the traditional way. The band can be happy with the result of their effort: the required intro (Vastatio Incipit) soon bursts into a malevolent and venomous brand of raw black metal (Lex Talionis), taking its cues from Darkthrone’s Under a Funeral Moon era, with which Lapis Niger share a lot of stylistic similarities – even if they can’t obviously match its grandeur – in the riffing and drumming department (wild and cutting without overdoing), and even in the structure of the composition. Beside this, Zrohell might not have been gifted with the same thick and sepulchral vocals of Nocturno Culto, but his high pitched tone fits the orgiastic and filthy framework provided by this Italic trio anyway. Also, much of the praise here has to do with the production, which is icy, organic and deliciously old – fashioned; it really adds a lot of depth and unholy atmosphere to the songs, which pleasantly wind along well done tempo signature changes and varied paces. A little bit more creativity on the guitar work side is probably missed, as it shows interesting potential, yet is sometimes sounds kind of restrained and limited, just as if the band feared to dare too much. Plus, there are some skip-tracks as well (The Dirty Cross and Days of Eclipse), that pretty much kill the flow of the album as they seem to be assembled in a less inspired manner. On the other hand, Human Sunset and Omega contain some exciting moments, even if they get a bit repetitive in the long run. Without any doubt, Fuckin’ god cult is head and shoulders above the dull average releases that are coming to infest the most obscure layers of black metal underground, thus if the intention of the band was to pay homage to the milestones in the history of the genre, with particular reference to the legendary second wave of Scandinavian ensembles, they can be satisfied with their endeavor. Derivative, but likable for old school black metal connoisseurs.
