Written by Kurtz [Metal Archives]
One thing about metal and music in general that I'm really fond of, is when a band of my favorites puts out its own collection of demos, singles and rarities. The better they are done, the easier I am discouraged from hunting down tons of promos and worn-out 15-year-old tapes. What we have got here contains the complete works of CorpseFucking Art from the nineties, spanning from their early demos under the name Enthralment to what was supposed to be their debut album "A Puzzle of Flesh" which, unbeknownst to the band, was trimmed into a miniCD by the record label to save on pressing costs.
I will not go deep into the musical aspects of these tracks, as I feel proper to deal with them on separate reviews one day. Instead, I will discuss on the record's value as a collection. Nevertheless, my final rating takes into account the musical quality of the disc. This retrospective is very complete, as it contains stuff which had been released on cd, vinyl and tape, plus a couple of extremely rare cuts. The sole tracks we miss are the two of them which were removed from "A Puzzle...", but it seems the band could't get a hold of them either.
Despite the fact that this disc was released under the name CorpseFucking Art, the inclusion of tracks from its previous incarnations Corpsegod and Enthralment basically means you have to deal with three different bands. We have the Enthralment demo, their 7" EP and one rehearsal track, all dated 1994: a time when the role of Italy in the Death Metal world was still so unclear. Enthralment moved their first, humble steps on the tide of bands like Incantation and Immolation, roaring unholy lyrics along with brutal and desolate dirges.
We have the Corpsegod recordings from 1995, comprised of their "Opinion about Sorrow" MCD and a pre-production rehearsal track. Behind their name change hid their ticket to an undiscovered country: so close to the newborn Brutal Death Metal scene, yet so eager to experiment with electronics and other forms of extremism. They were deemed "brutal psychedelic death metal" at the time they came out: very few labels could have suited them better.
The eleven tracks this cd begins with are those released as CorpseFucking Art: a 2-song promo recording which boasted a fresh new line-up, and the MCD from 1999 which confirmed their status as the importers of brutal death metal in their country. Today, i still feel this MCD has the strongest material the band ever made.
As to the remastering quality, I'd say it is overall satisfactory: both miniCDs have undergone a proper pumping on their sound amplitude, and the 7" EP was brought back to life, in a way: it now sounds like it had been originally conceived for CD. The matter is a bit tougher for the tapes: a bit blurred here and there due to the removal of heavy background hiss. Still it's much better than hearing them from the cassettes, and they still blend well with the other recordings.
The front cover confirms the humorous vein the band has been taking over the last few years. It shows the same character that Chris Moyen had drawn for "A Puzzle...", this time portraiting a bizarre and grotesque Venus de Milo. It might not be coherent with the style the old material had, but surely gives you an insight as to what we can expect from their upcoming works. No lyrics are included, but after all the only songs with actual lyrics were the Enthralment ones. Instead there are liner notes for each recording written by guitarist Andrea Cipolla, the only survivor from the line-ups that made these recordings. Though the font type makes them a bit hard to read, the notes are more complete than the biography on their website, and reveal a large part of their Odyssey across a land that still wasn't ready to accept the change. They were never ahead of their time perhaps, but sure they were always ahead of their place.
At the time I am writing, their second full-length album is not recorded yet. So far, if I had to save only one cd of theirs from annihilation, no doubt I would save this one. A piece of Death Metal history worth knowing.
